Nowadays, the market is overcrowded with a wide range of shampoos and other hair care products. It is an overwhelming task to choose the best out of the huge number of shampoos from different brands. You need to make sure the shampoo you choose is free from harsh chemicals that affect your hair negatively. The truth is that several shampoos available on the market contain potentially harmful chemicals. You need to have a clear idea about the harmful ingredients to avoid choosing shampoos containing those.

Here are some of the most common harmful ingredients in hair care products:

1. Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES):

SLES falls in the group of sulfates and is considered a strong detergent that reacts with the sebum on the scalp and water. Sulfate shampoos eliminate all essential oils and dirt when you rinse out the shampoo. It will make your hair dry, brittle, and frizzy.

2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS):

SLS is another component from the sulfate group. It creates a rich lather that most people love to have while applying shampoo. Leftover sodium lauryl sulfate negatively affects the hair follicles and causes other side effects on the skin. It is advised to avoid SLS for those with color-treated or dry hair as it causes fading of hair color and stripping off the natural oils on the hair strands.

3. Parabens:

The primary function of the parabens are to prevent the growth of bacteria. Commonly known as xenoestrogens, it will create a hormonal imbalance and cause skin irritation. Frequent use will affect reproductive health and it also causes neurotoxicity. If you look for the name parabens in the shampoo ingredient list, you can’t find it. You need to look for names such as ethylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben, etc.

4. Formaldehyde:

It is used in several hair care products. Methylene glycol and Formalin are the most commonly used Formaldehydes in hair care products. It is usually used as a vapor to improve the smoothing and cleansing properties of shampoos. It might cause skin irritation for those with sensitive skin.

5. Sodium Chloride:

It is used in shampoos to obtain a thicker consistency. Sodium chloride can make your scalp dry and itchy which might lead to hair loss over time.

6. Alcohol:

Alcohol is the most common hair ingredient used in shampoos and it helps active ingredients to penetrate your hair. Alcohols possess high drying properties. Alcohol names that begin with “C” and “S”, Cetearyl alcohol and Stearyl alcohol, are not too bad for dry hair. These alcohols help to retain moisture in your hair. Isopropyl alcohol or propanol is not good for those with dry hair. If you find alcohol in the ingredient list of the shampoo you choose, you should go for a shampoo containing alternative ingredients.

7. Synthetic Colors:

Most shampoos in the market contain synthetic colors that are used to make the appearance of shampoo nicer. These colors are usually extracted from petroleum or coal-tar sources and are harmful to your hair. These colors will be mentioned in the ingredient list by the name FD&C or D&C in combination with a number.
